Avoid the Instinctive Drive to Authenticate™ - natural talents, needs and vulnerabilities PDF Print E-mail

If you AVOID the Instinctive Drive to Authenticate™, you…

…will need…have the talent to

To leverage your effort (e.g. by delegation).

To be personally involved in conceptualising, but not the "doing" / implementation.

Diplomacy and discretion from others and an appreciation for the "invisible" contribution including subtle communication, past experience, lobbying behind the scenes, etc.

To be given the "benefit of the doubt".

To be recognised for your mental rather than physical contribution, including the contribution of your "personality".

To be free to act on your intuition and not have it automatically dismissed.

To share your philosophies.

To be able to pursue your idealistic beliefs and values.

Be very intuitive, naturally reading the unspoken language "between the lines".

Be very perceptive of other peoples' feelings and adjust your approach accordingly.

Strive for idealistic outcomes and are not suppressed by current realities.

Leverage your time including delegation and non-involvement.

Show discretion and diplomacy, varying your delivery and timing as required to meet outcomes.

Influence and produce results without being obvious (i.e. working behind the scenes).

Be loyal to feelings, motives and values more than the spoken word.

Conceptualise and theorise.

…are vulnerable to…have stress triggered

Causing others to feel ignored or unimportant due to your non-involvement.

Misunderstanding and conflict because you don't (consistently) fully disclose your true thoughts and feelings.

Compromising your credibility and time management because of your idealism, apparent "rainbow chasing" and frequent "blindness" to reality.

Exaggerating situations out of context and reading too much into things, especially when not dealing with them face to face.

Contributing so subtley that it can go unnoticed.

When you believe others have a negative perception of you.

When others sense of perfection or realism doesn't live up to your sense of idealism.

When there is no opportunity to leverage your efforts.

If you AVOID the Instinctive Drive to Authenticate you may recognise this…

You're on the phone with your best friend again saying, "Am I being unrealistic on this or is this just not OK?" Once again you find yourself in the middle of a situation where you think you have clearly articulated your vision and passion for the project. You are absolutely sure that everyone is on board and as committed and excited about the project as you are. Then after 6 weeks of preparation one of the group sends an email, doesn't even have the decency to call and informs you that she has to pull out. You are genuinely shocked and bitterly disappointed at what you see is a blatant disrespect and disregard for the effort involved and for the integrity and bigger vision of the project. You can't understand it. What is wrong with these people?

Where as the Authenticator lives and dies by "What you see is what you get?" you are a little, OK a lot more complicated. What you see is just a tiny sliver of what you get and everyone else's job is to unpack the rest, to take the time and effort to gain your trust and allow the full force of your personality to pour out. You expect that everyone will read between the lines and you assume that they "get it" but the reality is that 50% of the people you will communicate with on a daily basis won't. The Authenticators will not read between any lines, they won't take the time to work out what you were trying to say or interpret the nuances of your language or body posture, they won't mull over conversations deciphering 15 alternative meanings for the last conversation you had. You speak, they hear exactly what is said and that's it - end of story. The Authenticator will spent his or her life saying, "Yeah but wasn't that obvious?", "Yeah but you know what I meant right?" or "What, do I have to spell it out?" Newsflash for the Avoid Authenticates, when dealing with their more black and white cousins - yes they do have to spell it out and even when dealing with other Avoid Authenticates you have to be very clear about expectations of what is required, when it's required and who specifically is to do it. Leave nothing to interpretation and your life will be much easier.

Your world is about emotions, dreams and philosophies not necessarily about the action associated with making those things reality. Your instinct is strong and you have a natural intuition for reading people. Those around you can accuse you of being too "in the clouds" and you do enjoy getting on your soapbox every now and again. Just because you are motivated by the philosophical nature of life and the realm of ideas and concepts doesn't mean you are timid or boring. It just means that before, during and certainly after the tequila slammers you will be holed up in a corner with a few people talking about existentialism and the modern society!
